  8.     A place of bleak illumination
  9.     Clean-stripped of clouds and dust,
  10.     Ultimate as the apogean moon;
  11.     Where codes and cults, philosophies and gods
  12.     Thin out and varnish on the waste and vast
  13.     Like smoke of fires gone cold
  14.     In nomad camps deserted yesterday.

  16.     Here is the infinite unveiled
  17.     In visions not of evil or of good;
  18.     And the night looks down on us
  19.     With only suns for eyes;
  20.     And knowledge is our delirium,
  21.     The bringer of new appearances,
  22.     The breeder of new apparitions.

  24.     What shall we do
  25.     For whom the heavens are throneless, and there is
  26.     No demon prince to supplicate and serve?
  27.     Shall we pray for succor to the rocks
  28.     Or beg the sea for aid?
  29.     The breath of prayer, the windiness of imploration,

  31.     Nor blows with it in power and violence
